Denise’s Social Column
Waverley Cemetery Walk - With much regret I could not be there on the day, however I left everything in the capable hands of my sister Pam. Having handed over timetables, rosters, the works, they set off without me. What follows is a short narrative by Pam of what happened on the day:-
"All of the travel arrangements that Denise had acquired worked out very well, and we all arrived safe and sound at the Cemetery on time for our tour. Our guide, Sean O'Connell was very informative and our tour was very interesting. I had no idea that there were so many famous people buried there, it really was an education. Even a little light rain from time to time could not dampen (no pun intended) our spirits. It really is a very pretty site, as Carole Cockshott said, it is a view to "die for". The tour took about 2 hours and Sean was very happy to answer all our questions, of which there were many. An extremely worthwhile trip, and I believe Denise is going to organise another one some time next year, really worth going to if you missed this one. After the tour was completed, some of us walked back up to the corner and had lunch in a little cafe, after which we headed home."
Upcoming social events:- Next is the Annual BBQ and tour of Quongong House on Saturday, 15th October. The Society is providing the meat, bread, onions and sauces and members to bring their own drinks, salads, etc. It would be nice to see more people attend the BBQ, we really have a very nice day together.

Electoral Rolls
With the change of legislation last year that introduced computerised access to Electoral Rolls, family history and other organisations are no longer able to purchase copies on microfiche. This is a disaster as Electoral Rolls have long been wonderful research tools.
How many of us in only a few years’ time would like to be able to consult this year’s Electoral Roll? If you don’t live near a State Library, you will have to make a trip to one as they are the only organisations continuing to be supplied with the Electoral Roll on Microfiche.
If you think this situation is unfair, let your Federal MP know! If he or she advises that the change was due to “cost constraints’ let them know that they are ill-informed. Microfiche are produced by first making a master of the original material and then making copies from the master. Most of the cost of producing microfiche is in making th master - the copies are inexpensive to generate.
By making copies available to State Libraries, the Australian Electoral Commission has shown it can afford to publish Electoral Rolls on microfiche. Why then are copies no longer available to other organisations, as they were in the past? Even being embargoed for some years would be better than not having them at all. A very good question for your Federal MP.

FILM MADE IN CAMPBELLTOWN
Excitement among local residents and passing motorists ran high last week when a film unit spent the day in Campbelltown making a documentary film.
The company was the Australian Tradition Film Co., which is making a bracket of three documentary films, which are also to be televised.
The location for the grater portion of the film was the old building in Queen Street near Carlisles store.
This building was at one time an old inn, and a few alterations to the face of the structure by the company once again gave it the appearance of an inn.
For the purpose of the film the building became the “Woolpack Hotel” with a notice on the door “Patrick Rooney, licensed to sell fermented and spirituous liquors.”
The title of the film made in Campbelltown was “Union, bury their dead,” from a short story by Henry Lawson.
“Load of Wood” was another film made recently by the Company at Windsor, and from Campbelltown the unit moved to Picton to make a third film.
Many Onlookers
In addition to local residents many passing motorists stopped their vehicles and watched the film in the making. Traffic was parked on both sides of the road for some distance throughout the day.
Everyone was as interested in the preparation made prior to the taking of each scene, as in the actual filming of the story itself.
Of particular interest was the old coach hearse drawn by a horse, with a coffin and all complete, which figured prominently in the proceedings.
