lovely day. The weather was great, and so we enjoyed a great lunch with
good company, Jenny Goodfellow was kind enough to take us through the
house, which is looking beautiful with the furniture in it, thank you Jenny.
Would all the people who have booked tickets for HAIR, on Saturday 17th
November, please pay for their tickets today, if possible. Thanks.
We still need volunteers for our Xmas raffle at Macarthur Square on

http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/index.php?&set=yes
This is a national initiative organized by the Irish Family History
Foundation which co-ordinates and represents the county based
genealogical centres on the island of Ireland. Over the coming months
the records of other centres will become available firstly as individual
county databases, and then these will be amalgamated into one Irish

* The Western Australian Post Office Directories

The WA Post Office directories (from 1893 through 1945) provide
information by locality, individual surname, government service, and by
trade or profession. The different sections enable the enquirer to see
at a glance the householders or businesses in any one town; the address
of any householder or business in the State; and the businesses or
individuals throughout Western Australia engaged in any trade or profession.

Fact Sheet 58
World War I internee, alien and POW records held in Canberra.
During World War I internment in Australia was regulated by the War
Precautions Act 1914 and its regulations. The main internment camp was
at Liverpool, New South Wales. Most of the internees were Germans living
in Australia who were subsequently deported.
The Archives holds many records specifically relating to internment and
internees. However, references to individuals often occur in files with
general titles. Also, it was not uncommon for internees to be moved from
one camp to another, even to another state. Thus records that relate to
individual internees may be difficult to identify, though they may exist
in the collection of more than one office of the Archives.
This fact sheet identifies records of World War I internees, aliens and
prisoners of war held in Canberra. Records in other offices can be
identified by using the Archives' publication Finding Families: The
Guide to the National Archives of Australia for Genealogists, or the
Archives RecordSearch database.
Please access the following link for that information on this fact sheet.

On-line Poll
We have an on-line poll on our website. The poll asks a question on
where you are researching your ancestors from. This will enable us to
target the purchase of new resources in a better fashion to our members.
It will also enable us to provide speakers on topics relating to the
poll results.

Archives in Brief 34
Convicts' families
This AIB provides a brief overview of the major sources held by State
Records that relate to the families of convicts and their arrival in New
South Wales.
Historical background
Wives and families of convicts sometimes accompanied their convict
relations or came out later. Children were placed on board the convict
transports with their parent(s) often with no official record of their
transportation or arrival being recorded. The children were supported
and fed at government expense and orphan homes were established to
accommodate those deserted or separated from their parents. Young
children were permitted to stay with their mothers in the Female Factory
until they reached the age of four when they were sent to the Orphan
Schools and returned to their mother when she left the Factory.
Convicts could apply to have their families brought out at the expense
of the Crown. Applications had to show that a convict would be able to
support his family upon their arrival and not incur any further expense
to the Government. In general, families were not permitted to reunite in
Australia unless the convict applying had a Ticket of Leave. This
indulgence allowed a convict to work for himself, thereby providing a
means for supporting his family.
After a convict had applied to have his family brought out to the
Colony, the application was assessed by the Government. On arrival the
spouse often applied to have the convict assigned to them. This allowed
the convict to serve out his sentence while living with his family.
Please review this AIB, if you are planning to visit State Archives.
