Surname Origins.

JUDD.

(Origin Hebrew) From Juda, praise, confession, and signifies the confessor of God. Jode or Jood, in the Dutch, means Israelite, a Jew; Jute, a native of Jutland.

Distribution of Judd Families in England and Wales in 1891 -
Predominantly in South-East England and London, with even scatterings across the rest of England. None in North-West England or Wales.
Most numbers to US came from England, with some also from Ireland, Scotland, Germany and Sweden.
In 1880, occupations tended more to farming than the general population. Life expectancy from 1940 to 1956 tended lower than the general population, but caught up after that.

Daniel Jurd, was an ancestor of Peter Stewart, our Treasurer. The Jurd surname was changed from Judd on arrival in Australia about the time of Daniel's marriage to Elizabeth Douglas, daughter of 2 First Fleeter's, William Douglas [Alexander] & Mary Groves [Prince of Wales] in 1812. There are at least 4 different families of Jurd now in Australia.
