Denise's Social Column
As you recall I was not in attendance at the Fishers Ghost Stall, but I am told it all went well.
A tentative date for the Mt Annan Walk is for May, 2007.
A trip to the State Archives is planned for Saturday 10th Feb, 2007, for those wishing to go, you can let me know at the February, monthly meeting.
I am in the process of arranging dates with the CAHS for a visit to St Helens Park House.
Today is the last meeting for the year and of course our Christmas Party, it has been a very busy, buy enjoyable year.
I would like to thank all those people who have helped out with the stalls, and have come along to our outings thou the year, you make them the fun that they usual are.
I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Denise.

Lost in NSW Land Records
On the weekend on the 4th & 5th November 2006 I attended a two day course held by SAG in Sydney called "Lost in NSW Land Records".
Various speakers were experts on different areas of researching land records. Vicki Eldridge began the first day with a timeline showing the various methods of land acquisition from 1791 to the current day. There was Christine Yeats from the State Records of New South Wales showing what records they hold and how to access them. Also a very interesting talk by Celia Murphy from the Department of Lands Bathurst office about the parish maps on-line web site and the Geographical Names Board. Alan Day explained about parish maps and the details they contain. Government Gazettes are a very useful tool in researching land and that was explained. We were also given an overview by Ben Clark of what the Mitchell Library holds, including a large collection of maps and plans. Helen Dickenson helped us to understand our way around the Land Titles Office and the various indexes that would help. The last speaker was Terry Kass and he enlightened the listeners to what Primary Application Packets contain and some of the "potential treasures within". Unfortunately, these packets have yet to be made available at the State Records but I am sure we will be all waiting in line to order them when they do.
If anyone is interested to know more about how to research land records, I have copied all the handouts I was given on the weekend and will leave a set in the FH section of the library. I would recommend the course to others if SAG holds a similar one in the future.
Regards,
Elizabeth Hook

Fact Sheet 21
Parliamentary Papers.
A Parliamentary Paper is a document which has been:
* formally presented to a Parliament - this is usually described as being tabled in Parliament; and
* ordered by Parliament to be printed - this means that it is available to the public in printed form.
Most Parliamentary Papers are about the workings of the executive government. They are very useful sources because they are readily accessible, provide a solid overview of their subjects and contain valuable pointers for further research.
Other items in this Fact Sheet:
* Using Parliamentary papers
* Where can you find Parliamentary papers?
* What happens to papers that are tabled but not printed?
